How does the program go about determining the number of batters faced?
I ask because in a recent game a new pitcher was brought into a game at the start of the inning and in that inning there was a ground out, a single, a strike out and then in the middle of the at-bat for the fourth batter of the inning, the runner was caught stealing.
In the reports for the game, the program list batters faced for that one pitcher as three, however, four batters came to the plate.
Is there a scoring rule that says it doesn't count as a faced batter until the at bat is completed?
Thanks in advance.

BF is accumulated once the batter completes his time at bat. So a subbed in pitcher can get out of the inning without facing a single batter.
